Reading
Review will be the focus of shared reading. Students will read a selection from “George in Martha” in which a friendship experiences problems after an innocent drenching with a garden hose. We will also share a non-fiction piece entitled Hippos. Through these selections, we will be reviewing story structure (characters, setting, problem, and solution) and fantasy and reality, as well as predicting outcomes. All short vowels and long a, and long i will also be revisited. As we wrap up our Silly Stories theme, students will be introduced to their first test-taking skill, choosing the best answer, before they take the first theme test of the year on Friday.
Math
This week in math, students will continue to sharpen their addition and subtraction skills. Two ways Everyday Math provides practice are through “Frames and Arrows” and “What’s My Rule” tables. Remember, if you have questions regarding either, you can read the family letter for more assistance. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you still have questions! We will be doing these throughout the year and we want our students to be successful! You can expect Home Links Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights
Writing
In writing, we’ve reviewed topic sentences and sub-topic sentences and have begun writing detail sentences. This week, students will learn to use when, where, why, and how details in their writing to tell more about their sub-topics. We are nearly finished reviewing the components of a Step Up to Writing “accordion” paragraph and soon move on to writing complete paragraphs. Students can practice writing paragraphs at home by choosing any topic, creating an outline, and then writing the paragraph.

Science
Our science study of solids, liquids, and gases is off to a great start. We will continue this week by learning the properties of solids and liquids. We will also learn that a solid has a definite shape, whereas a liquid does not. As you sit at the dinner table, have your family classify the parts of the meal as solids, liquids, and gases.
