4th Grade Classroom Curriculum Connections and Learning Objectives:

Reading:  Students will be engaged in using comprehension reading strategies to enhance their reading ability.  The strategies will be taught in shared reading, reinforced in guided reading, and practiced independently during independent practice.  The strategies are: predicting, summarizing, connecting, inferring, questioning, and imaging.

Word Work:  There are 2 components to word work.  Word wisdom is a vocabulary program that students will learn the meanings of words.  We will work to unlock the meaning, process the meaning and apply the meaning in speaking and writing.  Spelling will consist of a pretest on Monday of 20 words with a phonetic pattern.  Students will be responsible for the 10 words on Friday that are most frequently misspelled.

Grammar/Writing:  We will learn about grammar skills and apply these skills in daily writing.  We will also write various types of essays; narrative, expository, descriptive.

Science/Social Studies:  We will study Science in the first half of the year and Social Studies in the second half of the year.  Science themes include Earth's Land, Weather, Living and Non-Living Things, and Energy.  The Social Studies curriculum will focus on Illinois.

Math:  We will be doing Rhymes and Times daily beginning with multiplication and Everyday Math.  Students will learn skills in Geometry, Number Sense, Data Collection and Measurement.
