Conflict Resolution

by Annie Smith

January 14, 2008

Conflict resolution is a skill I work on daily with many students. This skill is important when interacting with others on a daily basis at school, at home or in the community.  I have a format to follow to ensure time effectiveness and respect to everyone involved. In the end, students are able express their needs and negotiate an agreement which results in a positive experience.  Feel free to try this at home.  Being able to resolve conflict is just like a sport........the more you practice the better you will become!

CONFLICT RESOLUTION
What to do before using the skill:
* Plan what you want to say.
* Determine a good time and place to talk
* Maintain a good attitude

1. Get an agreement to talk
2. DESCRIBE THE CONFLICT-Each person should tell about it in his or her own words.
3. DESCRIBE WHAT CAUSED THE CONFLICT-What specific events caused the conflict?
4. DESCRIBE THE FEELING-Related to the conflict
5. LISTEN CAREFULLY AND RESPECTFULLY-try to understand the other point of view and don't interrupt.
6. BRAINSTORM SOLUTIONS-all ideas are okay
7. TRY YOUR SOLUTION
8. If that doesn't work, TRY ANOTHER

CONFLICT HAPPENS, but people can get along even when they disagree.
