Comprehension Strategies
by Jenny Mendenhall
During reading, we will focus on 6 main comprehension strategies to help students become strong readers. While many good readers naturally do these things, there may be a time when students are faced with difficult text. Knowing and understanding how to use these strategies will help them during those times. It is also our hope that students become lifelong readers and enjoy reading for fun!
Predicting: preview and predict while reading text in order to search for key ideas
Summarizing: summarize text to confirm and combine key ideas identified in the predicting process
Connecting: relate text to background knowledge in order to retain and remember identified key ideas
Questioning: use background knowledge to answer questions created while reading
Inferring: use questions and connections to anticipate the author's intent
Imaging: use sensory and conceptual imagery to complete the comprehension process
