First and second grade

We are  working on activities to improve our DIBEL scores and MAP scores  during guided reading. The children are working with myself and an aide during Guided Reading to get a double dose to help close the gaps. We have many games to help us as well make the skill more enjoyable. We  have access to a computer program called Odyssey which has been proven to increase children's achievement in school. The children enjoy it very much but sometimes do not complete assignments. they must score at least 80% to move to the next assignment. It is also aligned to Illinois Learning Standards and MAP RIT scores which is an added bonus!

This week, some of the children are working on long o words and short u, and o .. We are spelling, reading and manipulating with letters to learn these sounds. Mr. Davis is working with the children on these skills.

We are also doing choral reading on repeated text to practice fluent reading and speaking. the children enjoy it very much! This should help our Oral Reading Fluency on the DIBELS.

Spelling

The first and some second graders are  doing well with their spelling words!  We are going to use a Spelling Program that is hands on and uses sight words. Our words this week are: green yellow, red, brown, blue, pink, white, orange, black and purple.  Some are still working on long o and have : cone, note, moan, goat, mope and tote. I would suggest that  you look over the words that I am sending home and focus on the ones that your child has trouble with.We are reading sentences with these words, and spelling and reading the words.

First grade

We are correcting my sentences as well as writing our own. We are focusing on punctuation, telling sentences, questions and spacing. I am giving them sentence starters to finish. We are beginning to write framed paragraphs also..We are also learning punctuation and capitalizing rules.

Second Grade

The children have been learning about questions and declarative sentences. Some of them are writing questions and sentences while others are writing power outlines and writing paragraphs. The second graders are writing paragraphs  independently.

The children are all working on questions and answering with complete sentences.
