by Kelly Fraase
October 22, 2007

Riverton Elementary School adopted Houghton Mifflin Reading for the 2007-2008 school year.  This reading program is designed to specifically meet the needs of students. Outlined below are key elements of the program, as well grade level reading curriculum maps:

Students gather the skills needed to recognize that a spoken word consists of a sequence of individual sounds.

During instruction, students study the way in which a variety of spellings represent the sounds that make up words.

Students practice reading accurately, quickly, and effortlessly while using expression and meaning.  Fluent readers are better able to focus on content.

Students focus on learning the meaning of new words and concepts.  New vocabulary is then used to increase comprehension of reading passages.

During instruction, students practice a variety of strategies to increase understanding of what is being read.
