Riverton CUSD #14 Substitute Information

WHAT IS THE PAY RATE FOR SUBSTITUTES?

For the 2022-2023 school year, substitute teachers are compensated at $125 per day and substitute paraprofessionals at $100 per day.

WHAT DOES A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER OR PARAPROFESSIONAL DO?

A substitute teacher takes on the role of a classroom teacher, when they are absent from school.  Substitute plans will be provided by the classroom teachers, giving a guide to any substitute.  General duties include providing students with work and assignments, answering questions from students, and managing the classroom environment.

A substitute paraprofessional takes on the role of a classroom or individual aide, when they are absent from school.  Substitute paraprofessionals will be assigned to assist in individual classrooms or with individual students.  They will aid our classroom teachers in assisting with the students while the teacher is teaching.

WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS TO BE A SUBSTITUTE?

To be a substitute teacher, an individual must have a Bachelor's Degree and be registered in Sangamon County.  An individual with a substitute license can also serve as a paraprofessional.

To be a short-term substitute teacher, an individual must hold an Associate's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education or show completion of 60 semester hours of coursework, AND complete required training offered through the Regional Office of Education.  An individual with a short-term substitute license can also serve as a paraprofessional.

To be a substitute paraprofessional, an individual must be at least 19 years of age and have one of the following:

  • Associate's Degree or higher;

  • 60 semester hours of coursework;

  • High School Diploma or GED AND a score of 460 or higher on the ETS Parapro;

  • High School Diploma or GED AND the following scores on the ACT Workkeys:

    • Applied Mathematics/Applied Math (with a score 4); or,​

    • Reading for information/Workplace Documents (with a score of 4).

HOW TO I GET REGISTERED TO BE A SUBSTITUTE?

Any individual can register to be a substitute online by creating an account through the Educator Licensure Information System (ELIS) on the Illinois State Board of Education website.

WHAT DO I DO AFTER I HAVE APPLIED FOR A SUBSTITUTE LICENSE?

  1. After creating an ELIS account, official transcripts must be in a sealed envelope or may be sent electronically from the college/university to Kellie Brewer at kbrewer@roe51.org.

  2. Provide proof of freedom from communicable diseases from a physician to the Regional Office of Education.

  3. Schedule an appointment for a fingerprint background check at the Regional Office of Education.

  4. After being issued a Substitute License, register the license in Sangamon County through ELIS ($50 for 5 years).

  5. Provide Substitute License documentation to the Riverton Schools District Office.

ONCE I AM SIGNED UP TO BE A SUBSTITUTE, HOW WILL I BE CONTACTED?

All of our substitutes are contacted through an online system (Frontline Substitute Management).  Individuals can choose to be contacted through a phone call, email, or text message, then sign up for roles through an online portal. 

HOW CAN I TAKE THE ETS PARAPRO OR ACT WORKKEYS TEST?

To take the ETS Parapro Test, anyone can sign up online.  The test can be taken at a testing center or at home.  The closest testing center to Riverton is at the Tazewell Regional Office of Education in Pekin
